The short answer

Generative engine optimization is the work of making a business’s public information accurate, useful and accessible for AI-assisted discovery, then measuring how the business appears in generated answers. A practical program combines website improvements, evidence and observation. The company controls its source material; each independent search or AI product controls the response it produces.

What work belongs in a GEO program?

Begin with a question map, a public-source audit and an evidence register. Use those to prioritize a small group of changes: clarify an offer, correct an outdated fact, document an implementation condition or resolve an access problem. Each change needs an owner and an acceptance check.

The observation layer then records actual responses under defined conditions. Content production and response collection are connected activities, but publishing a page does not itself count as gaining visibility.

How does this relate to SEO?

For Google’s generative search features, Google directs site owners to its established search foundations and useful original content. An answer hub should fit the existing website, including its relevant product pages and navigation. It should not become a parallel set of nearly identical pages created only for alternative query wording.

What to check

  1. Choose one audience and a buying decision rather than targeting every possible AI question.
  2. Record what your existing product, pricing and evidence pages already explain.
  3. Define the source improvements and the AI observations as separate deliverables.

A practical example

A software buyer asks whether a product supports a required workflow. A useful GEO intervention is a maintained page explaining the supported steps, prerequisites and limitations, backed by current documentation. The page can help the buyer even if no assistant cites it during the first observation period.

These steps are Arrow AI's implementation guidance. The example is illustrative; it is not a measured customer result. Publication and source access do not guarantee an AI recommendation.
