Start with the existing search foundation. Google says its established SEO practices remain relevant to AI search experiences. Examine whether your page answers the full buyer decision and whether the generated answer uses it accurately. A search position, an AI citation and a recommendation describe different observations.
Start with the existing useful source
A page that already answers the reader accurately may need maintenance rather than replacement. Inspect the parts a buyer still cannot verify: a current product condition, an implementation requirement, a service boundary or the evidence for a result. Retain useful history and links when improving that source.
Measure the additional outcome explicitly
A search ranking, an AI citation and a qualified inquiry are different observations. Define which one the work intends to investigate and collect a baseline for it. Do not rename all existing SEO activity as a measured GEO result.
For Google’s generative search features, its documented foundations still include accessible, useful web content. Additional formats should solve a reader or publishing problem rather than introduce duplicate versions of the same answer.
What to check
- Keep existing pages that already answer the buyer's question accurately and completely.
- Check source accessibility and indexing before assuming the problem requires a new content strategy.
- Compare the generated answer with your source: identify missing qualifications, outdated facts or a different interpretation of the offer.
A practical example
A page may rank for a category query but omit an important buying condition such as a minimum order. Adding the true condition improves usefulness; it does not establish that the page will be selected by an AI assistant.
Sources and further reading
These steps are Arrow AI's implementation guidance. The example is illustrative; it is not a measured customer result. Publication and source access do not guarantee an AI recommendation.
