The short answer

Arrow’s managed plans compare a defined competitor set against the same agreed buyer questions. Start includes two competitors, Growth three and Scale five. The comparison should preserve the recorded answers, dates and source links where available. It describes the sampled responses rather than a universal ranking of the market.

Choose competitors that match the decision

Include businesses or products that a buyer could realistically choose for the same need, location and scope. A famous brand may be a useful reference but a poor like-for-like competitor. Document why each comparison is included.

Use open buyer questions for recommendation comparisons. Questions that explicitly name your company test a different task and should not inflate the reported recommendation rate. Retain valid non-mentions and unavailable checks.

Use cited differences to choose better source information

Inspect what the response actually says about each option. A competitor may be mentioned as an unsuitable choice, and a citation may support a definition rather than a recommendation. Classification needs the surrounding passage.

Look for factual differences your own sources should explain: use cases, scope, limitations or evidence. Do not copy unsupported competitor claims or conclude that a cited page caused the assistant’s selection. A useful outcome is a specific improvement hypothesis that can be revisited.

What to check

  1. Choose competitors with a comparable audience and offer.
  2. Apply the same questions, conditions and classification rules.
  3. Separate mention rate, recommendation rate and source citations.

A practical example

A local provider compares businesses serving the same area. A national brand is reported as a reference, while the local shortlist remains the main like-for-like comparison.
