The short answer

Choose the address that makes the hub easiest to publish, maintain and connect to the rest of the business website. A subdirectory such as example.com/answers/ can share the existing site structure. A subdomain such as answers.example.com can support a separately managed publishing surface. The address format alone is not a demonstrated GEO advantage.

Make the choice operationally sustainable

Ask who can approve edits, how quickly a corrected fact can be published and whether the same templates can serve both the main website and the hub. A design that looks convenient on launch day can become expensive if it creates two sources for prices, service scope or product capabilities.

Keep business identity and access to the main offer clear whichever address you choose. Google’s starter guide treats subdomains and subdirectories as organizational choices; it does not prescribe a universal winner for every business.

Avoid a duplicate public version

Use consistent internal links to the preferred address. If both versions exist, decide whether one should redirect or whether a canonical signal is appropriate for genuinely duplicate content. A canonical is a signal about the preferred URL, not a command that forces selection by an engine.

Before a move, record current traffic and important inbound links. Test the destination, redirect and source content together so a URL migration does not quietly remove the answer the old page provided.

What to check

  1. Identify the publishing owner, existing CMS and deployment constraints.
  2. Choose one public address for each answer and keep navigation consistent.
  3. If moving existing pages, map the old URLs to relevant destinations and update links and sitemaps.

A practical example

Arrow Answers uses a subdomain while sharing the main website’s Vercel project and design system. That is an implementation choice. It does not establish that a separate hostname will outperform a well-maintained answer section on a client’s existing website.
